This week’s post takes leave of old photos to look at old paintings of some of the fairytale castles of Slovenia.

We spent the last few days lazing in Bovec, enjoying the scenery and peace it affords, while also delving into the bloody history of the area, where around 300,000 people died in the twelve Battles of the Isonzo, which raged in these now idyllic hills and valleys from 1915 to 1917. 

In what may the last of the recent series of posts on Slovenia in WW2, at least for a while, this week’s trip to the archives has come back with some of the more striking images of the country near the end of the war and just after. All of these were taken in 1945, sourced from Wikimedia, and are in the public domain, with the photographer named if known.

The long holiday weekend, with five days off for some, presents the perfect excuse for this week’s visit to the archives to cannibalize itself and review what was posted in the first three months of the year.
