Maybe you’ve seen the video on Facebook or elsewhere, perhaps popping up on your feed or another site as the Internet’s algorithms work out that you’re living in a foreign country and learning (or should be learning) the language. The advert is called “An Alien Abroad”, produced by Wieden & Kennedy London for a language learning app called Babbel. It shows an alien – called Alexi – struggling to communicate his wants and needs to listeners who speak English with an English accent, but for those viewers watching in Slovenia something seems a little off, a little wrong.
That’s because this wasn’t shot in London, Birmingham, Liverpool or Manchester, but Ljubljana, with certain familiar locations from downtown becoming clearer on second viewing (including Lolita, the cake store by the river with one of the world’s best cocktail makers, Draga Kepeš).
