Interior Minister Vesna Györkös Žnidar has noted that the police are ready for a possible new illegal migration wave across Slovenia, although it is not possible to predict when it could happen and how extensive it would be. She thinks that it will not be as extensive as it was two years ago.

STA, 19 April 2018 – "There are no guarantees that the worsening of the migration situation will not notably mark the upcoming period," the minister told the STA after the government session on Thursday.

"It is no secret that a new migration route is being opened across Bosnia. The police are ready, and plans have been drawn up," Györkös Žnidar said, adding that migrations would concern the entire country.

"If the situation worsens, Slovenia will be put to a test," she said. She noted that it was a good thing the state had established the Office for Support and Integration of Migrants, which would bring added value.

Standard attempts at crossing the Slovenian border illegally are on the rise, and the police have also been successful in busting organised criminal groups.

Statistics show a growing trend of illegal crossings of the border, with the weather playing an important role. "A further growth is expected in the warmer months, which already shows on the ground."

The minister believes that migrations will be one of the most important topics ahead of the 3 June general election. "It has never been more important in the modern era than now ahead of the election."

It is important that all departments do their job and not allow that the pre-election atmosphere affects such an important task as the management of migration flows, she added.
