Jonathan Reid Luskin (“Jon”), is a 25 year old American citizen, residing in Hong Kong where he works as a teacher, who has been missing since 22nd June 2018.
Jon left Hong Kong on 11th June 2018 for his summer vacation after the academic school year had finished in Hong Kong and travelled to Europe to meet his family. Jon travelled with his mother and other relatives in Europe until 22nd June 2018, when Jon’s mother returned to the United States from Vienna, Austria and Jon travelled on his own by train on the same day from Vienna, Austria to Ljubljana, Slovenia in the morning of 22nd June 2018.
Jon’s train left Vienna for Ljubljana at approximately 9 a.m. local time on 22nd June 2018. He arrived in Ljubljana, Slovenia later that day, 22nd June 2018, and arranged accommodation for the evening. Following enquiries by Jon’s family, friends, the United States Embassy in Slovenia and local police in Slovenia it is not known where Jon stayed on the evening of 22nd June 2018. It is possible that he stayed in a youth hostel or was couch surfing the evening of 22nd June 2018. Over the course of the evening of 22nd June 2018, Jon communicated with a friend via WhatsApp updating them as to his arrival in Slovenia and of his intention to undertake a hike over the weekend of 23/24 June 2018 in the Triglav National Park, Slovenia, commencing the following day, 23rd June 2018.
Jon has not been seen or heard from since 22nd June 2018 and has been missing for over 5 weeks.
The last physical sighting of Jon was by Jon’s mother in Vienna on the morning of 22nd June 2018 when Jon departed their accommodation in order to head to the train station in Vienna to catch his train to Ljubljana, Slovenia. The last communication received from Jon was to a close friend by way of WhatsApp message on the evening of 22nd June 2018. There has been no activity on any of Jon’s bank accounts or credit cards since before 22nd June 2018 and his family and friends are gravely concerned about Jon’s safety.
Jon had provisional travel plans after visiting Slovenia to continue his travel in Europe to Croatia and Greece before heading to Japan then intending to return to Hong Kong on 4 August 2018 in time for the new academic year. There is no indication that Jon was able to continue his travels in this manner and the lack of any activity on any credit card or bank account held by Jon indicates that such further travel is highly unlikely to have occurred and that Jon likely entered the Triglav National Park, Slovenia on 23rd June 2018 and did not come out of the national park.
Unfortunately, it is not presently known which route or trail Jon took through Triglav National Park, whether he was hiking alone or with others, which entrance to the national park Jon entered through or if he intended to stay in the park overnight in a park hut, or simply complete day hikes through the park.
Jon’s family and friends have notified the relevant U.S. Embassies in Slovenia and each other relevant country, the U.S. State Department, the FBI, Slovenian Police and Triglav National Park wardens to date but no trace of Jon or his current location have been found despite various attempts to locate him (see here and here).
