STA, 24 September 2018 - More than 70 foreigners were apprehended after illegally crossing the border in the Koper area in the west this weekend and another 36 in the Novo Mesto area in the south-east. There are currently 266 asylum seekers in the country, according to official statistics. 

Among the 72 people processed by the Koper police, 16 were from Algeria and just as many from Pakistan, 13 from Iraq, eight from Somalia, five from Syria, three from Afghanistan, just as many from India and Iran, two from Yemen, one from Morocco, one from Palestine and another from Tunisia.

Forty-three said they intend to ask for international protection in Slovenia, while the remaining 29 were returned to Croatia, the Koper Police Department said.

Meanwhile, the Novo Mesto police apprehended 13 migrants from Pakistan, six from Morocco, five from Iran, just as many from Syria, two from Afghanistan and two from Iraq, one from Tunisia, one from Algeria and one from Eritrea.

The individuals are still being processed by police.

According to the Government Office for the Support and Integration of Migrants, there are 266 asylum seekers in the country at the moment, 101 of whom at the asylum centre. Asylum has been granted to 623 persons so far, while 114 are still waiting for their motion to be processed, 72 of them at the Logatec branch of the Ljubljana asylum centre.
