The figures for what are internal borders in the Schengen zone were revealed in a response to an MP question from Vinko Gorenak of the opposition Democrats (SDS) about the alleged increase in the number of illegal migrants on the Slovenian-Italian border.
"The issue of illegal migrations exists on the Italian border, but migrants mainly cross from Italy to Slovenia," the Government Communication Office said after today's cabinet session.
The Italian police extradited 69 persons to Slovenian counterparts in 2017, including three Slovenian citizens.
The 66 foreigners were handed to Slovenia under the agreement on return of migrants, because they entered Italy from Slovenia and did not necessarily come here from Croatia, the government said.
It noted that a relatively large number of migrants who request international protection in Slovenia continue their journey to other EU countries before the end of the procedure, including to Italy.
