Slovenian voters have turned their discontent against mainstream parties in favour of newcomers in two previous general elections. Disillusioned again, they now appear to be willing to embrace Marjan Šarec, a comedian-turned-mayor who nearly defeated the favoured incumbent in the 2017 presidential election. 

Parliamentary Speaker Milan Brglez expressed surprise on Monday at what he said was an expression of support for the Pensioners' Party (DeSUS) by Russian Ambassador to Slovenia Doku Zavgayev. 

The Alpine resort of Bled will host from Wednesday to Saturday the 50th International Writers' Meeting, which is to bring together a record 90 authors from abroad. Shirin Ebadi, the first Iranian and the first Muslim woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, will be in the focus of the event.

The news from before. 

GKN Driveline, a British-owned car industry supplier, significantly scaled up its production last year, improving sales by around EUR 7m to almost EUR 84m. Profit also increased from the EUR 7.5m in 2016, but the Zreče-based company would not unveil the figure just yet. 

The party of Marjan Šarec is betting on its Time for New Generation platform focused on creating "a supportive, economically developed, internationally credible and fair-for-all state" to take it to a victory in the 3 June general election. 

Slovenia is looking to become an attractive destination for filmmaking, offering refunds for costs of production and post-production as of last year. It is for this reason that film workers, supported by the state, will again present Slovenia as a destination at this year's Cannes Film Festival. 

More than 20 parties have already announced they will compete for seats in parliament in the coming general election which President Borut Pahor has called for 3 June. In addition to all parliamentary parties, some will try to re-enter the National Assembly and some will attempt to convince voters to give new political forces a chance.
