STA, 26 April 2018 - Adrian Gomboc has become only the second Slovenian to win gold at a European judo championship as he defeated the Italian Matteo Medves to take home the title in the 66-kilo category in Tel Aviv on Thursday.

Gomboc, 23, scored an ippon* against Medves to achieve what is his career highlight after second place at the European Championship in Warsaw.

The achievement puts him side-by-side with his coach Rok Drakšič, who achieved the feat in Budapest in 2013.

"I don't know what to say. I've shown what I'm capable of," he said, adding that he has always managed to give it his best at major competitions.

* As per Wikipedia, “an ippon, 一本, ‘one full point’ is the highest score a fighter can achieve in a Japanese martial arts ippon-wazari contest.”
