Among the highlights will undoubtedly be the ascents of Janja Garnbret, the 18-year old from Šmartno pri Slovenj Gradcu, who finished her first season of international competitive sport climbing before completing high school, taking the 2017 IFSC Climbing World Cup. If you need convincing that she’s something special, check out some of her climbs in this story.
The young climber is currently ranked #1 in the world for lead climbing, but these next videos go all the way back to 2015, when she was just 15, and show her solving some difficult problems with the kind of strength, flexibility, skill and daring that should be on display this weekend. And if you can’t catch the event on TV, we’ll be back here with a recap when it’s done.
Finally, in the interests of full coverage we’ll also note that another Slovenian climber is currently in the world top ten for lead climbing, this time the men’s, with Domen Škofic riding high in 4th place. Good luck to them both in Villars.
