STA, 20 September - Slovenia's oldest city of Ptuj has been revealed as the world's hardest city for British holidaymakers to pronounce. In a survey by the Daily Mail that looked at the toughest-to-pronounce tourist destinations on the planet, Ptuj was mispronounced by 92% of those polled.

Ljubljana also ranked high on the list, finishing eighth with 61%.

Ptuj was followed by Guimaraes in Portugal (88%), Croatia's Rijeka (84%), Skopje in Macedonia (80%), Oaxaca in Mexico (76%), Sitges in Spain (72%), and Bloemfontein in South Africa (65%).

The landmark that stumped the most people, meanwhile, was the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull, which 98% of the respondents failed to pronounce correctly.

The study, by the Bolsover Cruise Club, polled 2,000 people, and they were also asked about food and phrases that they struggled to pronounce.

It turns out that the Slovenian language is the second hardest for Brits to master, right after Greek.
