As previously reported on TSN, Ptuj hit the headlines in UK last month, after topping a survey as the most difficult holiday destination to pronounce, with a whopping 92% of Brits surveyed unable to pronounce the name of Slovenia's oldest town correctly, according to a report carried in The Daily Mail. Slovene was also the second most difficult language according to the poll.
There is no such thing as bad publicity, and congratulations to the Ptuj Tourist Board for quickly and quick-wittedly turning the news into a great marketing opportunity.
Soon after the news broke, the tourist powers that be put together a very helpful guide for British visitors in how to pronounce Ptuj - with help from the residents of the town. A lovely, warm and short video which managed to not only explain the pronunciation but also showcase the considerable charms of one of Slovenia's most beautiful towns.
